Promotions
Coles run promotions on a different set of gift cards every week, offering either bonus Flybuys points, bonus value or a discount on the purchase price. These offers are only ever advertised in their weekly specials catalogue and with posters at the in-store gift card display, provided staff can be bothered to put them up.
Bonus points offers at Coles come in two varieties: multipliers (e.g. 20x points) and fixed bonuses (e.g. 2,000 points on $50 and $100 gift cards). With the fixed bonus points promotions, different denominations can earn the same bonus so often you are better off only buying the lowest value cards.
Flybuys points can be converted to Flybuys Dollars (spendable at Coles, Kmart, Officeworks etc), redeemed on gift cards and other items on the Flybuys Rewards Store or converted to Velocity Frequent Flyer points. 2,000 Flybuys points = $10 in Flybuys Dollars or 1,000 Velocity points.
If you bought $1,000 worth of gift cards during one of the common 20x Flybuys points offers at Coles, you would earn 20,000 Flybuys points, convertible to $100 in Flybuys Dollars or 10,000 Velocity points. It generally only makes sense to choose Velocity points if you’re going to use them to book reward flights.
