To earn 5% on these gift cards you have to be a member of Paylab’s Club or Premium membership which starts at around $6 for a month (they seem to be trialling slightly different pricing).
The cashback you earn on Paylab can’t be withdrawn to a bank account but you can instantly apply it to future gift card purchases you make.
For example, if you bought $1,000 worth of Department Store gift cards you’d earn $50 worth of credit that you can immediately use to buy another $50 gift card of your choice.
Category Choice Department Store gift cards can be used at any business that classified under one of the following merchant category codes:
- 5251: Hardware Stores
5311: Department Stores
5331: Variety Stores
5611: Men’s and Boys’ Clothing and Accessories Stores
5621: Women’s Ready to Wear Stores
5732: Electronic Sales
5941: Sporting Good Stores
5942: Book Stores
5912: Drug Stores, Pharmacies
Unofficially, they’re also known to support:
- 5310: Discount Stores (e.g. Kmart, Target etc)
If you don’t want to pay for a membership just to access this discount, you could instead buy these same gift cards on Amazon where they’re currently 4% off, although on Amazon you have to choose from predefined values (e.g. $50, $75, $100 etc) whereas with Paylab you can enter any amount between $50 and $500.

I would be quite surprised if it didn’t work although you have to be prepared for that possibility.
Officeworks, Specsavers take this card?
I doubt it. Officeworks I believe uses the merchant category code for office and stationary stores whilst Specsavers likely uses the MCC for opticians.
However, you should be able to use it to buy Officeworks-compatible Ultimate gift cards at Kmart, Target or Big W or, alternatively, Coles Group & Myer gift cards at Myer. There’s even a 20x Flybuys points offer on selected Ultimate gift cards beginning Thursday at Kmart that you could potentially use to stack your savings.
OW is 5943, Specsavers is 8042, you can use the CC Health & Wellness card there.
