The benefit of these no fee offers is that you can buy the Mastercard gift cards with a points earning Visa, Mastercard or American Express card and then use them to pay the ATO with zero fees (last we checked).
The ATO no longer charge a 0.2% fee when you use these gift cards so every dollar you spend can be applied towards your tax payment.
Normally, if you tried to use your points earning card to pay the ATO you would incur a surcharge and may not even earn any points due to the exclusions many cards have for government payments.
Of course, whilst you’ve long been able to use these gift cards to pay the ATO (both on the MyGov and Government EasyPay websites), it’s possible they might decide to stop allowing it at some point so don’t buy more gift cards than you’re prepared to be stuck with should it suddenly stop working.
Note also that these are digital only gift cards and they don’t support mobile wallets so they’re not the easiest things to use for other types of purchases.
