10% off Restaurant Choice gift cards (including variable load) at Coles

Image: Coles

Save 10% when you purchase $100 and $50-500 Restaurant Choice gift cards in-store at Coles between 9 Jul and 15 Jul 2025.

Here are the details:

  • Runs from Wed 9 Jul to Tue 15 Jul 2025
  • Only available in-store at Coles
  • Limit of five gift cards per customer

Restaurant Choice gift cards can be spent at any business that uses one of the following merchant category codes:

  • 5811: Caterers
  • 5812: Eating Places, Restaurants
  • 5813: Bars, Cocktail Lounges, Discotheques, Nightclubs, and Taverns: Drinking Places (Alcoholic Beverages)
  • 5814: Fast Food Restaurants
  • 7011: Lodging: Hotels, Motels, Resorts: not elsewhere classified
  • 7996: Amusement Parks, Carnivals, Circuses, Fortune Tellers

If you’ve never bought one of these gift cards before, they’re basically like prepaid Visa gift cards that will only work when spent at businesses that use one of the merchant category codes listed above.

You don’t have to ask if a restaurant or cafe accepts these gift cards as they should just work. You can swipe the physical card, select Credit and enter the PIN or, alternatively, add it to your mobile wallet (e.g. Apple Pay) and tap your device on the payment terminal.

  1. 10% off is great, but I prefer points, are aware of any points offer coming soon for the Restaurant or Cafe Choice? Thanks!

      1. Well, if you know how to play the game, you can get up to 5x more from points than you would get with that cold hard cash discount.

      1. The problem is that the TCN Restaurant comes in $100 which ends up being a pain to finish. I still got a couple of Good Food from the last deal, on paper they all seem to work mostly in the same places, but I’ve had a couple of restaurants and pubs declining it recently and I remember the Restaurant/Cafe Choice being accepted pretty much anywhere, unless things changed in the past year.

        1. Fair enough. The TCN Good Food gift cards should still work to buy Restaurant/Cafe Choice gift cards on ShopBack via Apple Pay if you want to convert them into something more useful.

          1. I had no idea that was possible! Thanks! I wish there was a way to split payment via Apple Pay haha

      1. 10% off still beats the 3.5% fee… as long as you don’t run out of gift card to spend in Aus

      2. Thanks…the issue is that my credit card also charge me a fee for 3% when use it overseas,so this at least would save me some money .so any hotels overseas as long as they accept visa I can use this ?

        1. Potentially but I can’t guarantee it would work for all hotels. It sounds like a lot of hassle and if anything goes wrong you won’t have the recourse that comes with a credit card. There are also plenty of cards that don’t charge any international fees.

    1. Yes. There may be some situations where they don’t work but in the vast majority of cases you should have no issues using them at cafes.

  2. Finally after a variable load Restaurant GC after more than 6 month… will load up dozens for sure but also keep cash stashed in case WWS went crazy to launch 20x points on Cafe Choice… then all hell breaks loose…

Also stacked up 2 dozen Good Food on 20x WWS points but $200 is still a pain if you have to order Wine (pretty much standard for any First Table Booking now)…

    1. I don’t think so. Bottle shops use the merchant category code ‘5921: Package Stores, Beer, Wine, and Liquor’ which isn’t supported by the Restaurant Choice gift card.

    2. You buy Wish (Woolworth Group) giftcards from Qantas Market Place at 3x Qantas Points, and use it across BWS/DanMurphy/WWS

  3. I saw other people‘s comment, and I am wondering why people prefer point than cash? How do we maximize the value of flybuy points?

  4. I bought five in one transaction, three of them worked fine at the cafe I normally go. The last two didn’t work so i tried at somewhere else that used to work with these cards, still didn’t work. They all showed “Approved” on the receipt and all valid when I checked balance. Finally, I found they worked after adding them to apple wallet and paid with ApplePay. They just didn’t work as a physical card. Note that the cafe terminal is not Square.

    1. I think I had a similar problem, went to pay with them at a restaurant Saturday night and it just kept declining which makes no sense. Will do as you say and add as Apple Pay!

      1. I tried at lunch time in the same cafe just now, with the card on ApplePay, it doesn’t work either. I guess they have blocked cafes’ MCC.

        Reply

        1. There’s no specific merchant category code for cafes as they are supposed to use 5814: Fast Food Restaurants. As for why it didn’t work for you, in some cases a business may choose not to accept any prepaid cards or they might have been assigned the wrong MCC. There’s little you can do in those situations but thankfully they’re quite rare.

          1. I go to the same cafe almost everyday so i know they have been accepting this card. It was the same terminal today. I’m not sure if there is a chance that the MCC on a terminal is changed.
