$13 off $250 Mastercard gift cards at Coles ($244 after $7 fee)

Image: Coles

Update: It appears that you can no longer use these gift cards to pay the ATO. See this article for more information.

Pay just $244 for a $250 Mastercard gift card at Coles when you scan a fully registered Flybuys card at the checkout.

These Mastercard gift cards can be used almost anywhere Mastercard is accepted both in-store and online.

Here are the details:

  • Runs from Wed 26 Nov to Tue 2 Dec 2025
  • Only available in-store at Coles
  • Limit of five gift cards per Flybuys account
  • You will also earn 1x Flybuys point per dollar spent
  • Excludes $50 and $100 Mastercard gift cards

If you want to buy more than five of these gift cards, you could use Flybuys accounts belonging to your friends or family. You get more discounted gift cards and they earn a few extra Flybuys points.

The Australian Taxation Office treats these as debit Mastercards which no longer have a surcharge as of 2025, meaning you should have no trouble using them to pay the ATO for zero fees on both the MyGov and Government EasyPay websites.

Whilst Coles Mastercards have long been known to work with the ATO, it’s possible that could change at any moment. If you are concerned about them not being accepted, just buy one gift card first as a test before committing to buying more.

Warning: Always check Coles Mastercard gift cards for signs of tampering immediately after purchase. If you want to be extra cautious, you can open each card after it has been scanned at the checkout but before you have actually paid, although this will likely attract the attention of staff. More information about this scam can be found here.

    1. Definitely worth a 5 min walk to the shops to get free money and my tax paid for free, plus flybuys points and points on my credit card, but you do you

  1. Do you get double the points? (Once when you buy the gift card then again if you use it for groceries?)

    Reply

    1. Yes. You earn 1x Flybuys point per dollar spent when buying the gift card. If you spend it somewhere that provides points (e.g. Coles, Woolworths etc) then you’ll also earn those points because that has nothing to do with your payment method.

  2. Does ATO accept split payment? How can I make the payment with more than 1 gift card?

    Reply

    1. You just enter how much you want to pay each time. If they only allowed people to pay the full amount owing the government would probably go broke.

  3. Can’t use at Australia Post for rates or water, the card swipes but doesn’t offer credit as option, only savings or cheque. Staff said can’t pay bills using credit card apparently

  4. can i buy this and use at woolworth to buy grocery? so i can split the card payment to use the balance?

    1. But there are many easier ways to get 2.9% off at woolworths, including just buying a ww gift card online directly

    1. It has previously worked without issue. There’s always a chance that may change one day, though.

      1. Can I do split payment in Coles to purchase them? Like CommBank card and category choice card

        Reply

        1. Yes – i have done the same this morning to use commbank cashback offer and category choice card- but split payments on gift cards purchases only work at staff service checkout

          1. Thanks for that, mixed payments with cards only work near cash register or service desk. IT WON’T WORK ON SELF CHECKOUT MACHINES. AND FLYBUYS DOLLARS(Card Swiping) won’t work. U can do split payments all cards only. But not gift cards.

  5. Might be a dumb question, but how can I use these cards to make a purchase in store?
I swipe the card and then? Push Credit, enter a pin of my choice on the Eftpos terminal and then select OK.
Then for future purchases, I swipe the card, enter the pin I first selected, and then hit OK.
Does this sound like the correct process?

      1. Thanks very much. I did this today – it went as planned except one thing. After swiping the card it immediately asked for a pin, there was no need/option to select the credit option on the terminal.

    1. It is. When they first ran this offer in 2023 it was five per day but in 2024 they changed it to just five per account for the duration of the offer which is the case this year as well.

    1. It looks like it’s no longer possible to use these gift cards to pay the ATO online as they’ve just made some substantial changes to their payment system. This article I’ve just written has more details.

  6. Is there anyway to check the balance of this through mybalancenow? system is forever down.
